Introducing the Tambo Springs Freight and Logistics Hub

Currently in development, the Tambo Springs Next Generation Inland Port and Logistics Gateway will hugely benefit the freight and logistics industry in South Africa. The inland port is being constructed by the Tambo Springs Development Company (TSDC) in partnership with our government. Aimed at enhancing supply chain efficiencies, the development will bring together all aspects of the warehousing, distribution, manufacturing, and shipping industries in one location.

Tambo Springs will double the current freight logistics capacity in and out of Gauteng by incorporating a number of features. This will include:

  •         An intermodal freight transport component, complete with a major new rail terminal and an intermodal yard accessible by rail.
  •         A business park to accommodate a commercial component.
  •         A residential area so that workers can live and work close to site, and allowing them to save money on transport costs.
  •         An advanced telecommunications network including high speed internet.
  •         Compliance with international standards regarding production, processing and transportation of goods, as well as SARS standards.
  •         An eco-focused development plan that aims to maximise energy efficiency while also protecting green areas and wetlands.
  •         An agro-industrial component focusing on high value products.

Tambo Springs will be strategically located on the southern periphery of the Johannesburg and Ekurhuleni metropoles, and within the road freight and rail corridor between Johannesburg and Durban. It will have easy access to major road and rail networks, linking it to the major sea ports, OR Tambo International Airport and the industrial areas of Gauteng. This allows the hub to seamlessly integrate road, rail, air and sea transport.

The location is situated in close proximity to the N3 highway connecting Durban and Johannesburg, as well as the N1 highway connection Johannesburg and Cape Town, and the R309 leading to Port Elizabeth and East London. All major industrial zones are within a 60 km radius, with City Deep and OR Tambo within 25 km.

This exciting development will ease transport and logistics headaches across Gauteng and South Africa by bringing all aspects of freight transport – air, sea, road, and rail – all into one purpose built facility.
